GES Business Leaders Summit 2011 Full Article
The following survey conducted by SHRM highlighted the challenges that many organizations face in launching a successful succession planning process.
One of the most critical challenges facing senior executives in global organizations today is preparing new leaders who will continue the innovation, growth and the strategic objectives of the organizations they currently lead. In order to emerge, organizations must place a strong focus on innovation and increased productivity. An organization's talent strategy must address short-term and long-term leadership succession requirements to ensure innovation, productivity gains and growth. As the global economy confronts challenges and instability, the importance of talent strategy only increases. At a time when most organizations face the uncertainty between recession and recovery, talent strategy is as important as ever. Companies can "grow their own" by creating a deep talent bench at every level, so that within five years there will be almost no need to recruit managers or leaders from the outside. Additionally, Talent Plus recommends you consider asking these questions as part of your succession planning initiative. 1. What results are your people achieving and what behaviors are they demonstrating to achieve those results? 2. Who are your critical talent and about whom do you have concerns?
Several research studies have indicated "structured interviews" are a more reliable way of predicting an employee's future performance. Wiesner & Cronshaw1 (1988) highlighted that structured interviews produced "mean validity coefficients" twice as high as unstructured interviews.
This means if you conduct a structured interview to explore the individual's inner thoughts, feelings, intentions and values, you can increase your assessment's effectiveness, thereby increasing your chances of selecting the right candidate. Talent Plus Takes Holiday Card to New Level in 2010 Full Article
View the 2010 Electronic Holiday Card
Talent Plus took a fresh approach to our holiday card by not only wishing recipients a happy holiday season but also educating and empowering them to make a difference. During the economic recovery, we are challenging people to give back. Not by investing monetarily but through an investment of time in someone's growth in 2011.
"Think of someone who invested in you - at work, in your family, in a community organization, in your neighborhood. What difference did it make? How can you pass that on?
This year, consider investing in someone's growth. It might be a family member, a work associate or someone you met while volunteering.
Take that investment and pass it on in 2011."
To aid people in giving back and investing in others, Talent Plus offers five key questions to get started. The key is not only to ask questions but to actively listen: + Do you have talents, skills or knowledge you would like to share with others? + What is your greatest talent? + What is the most meaningful recognition you've ever received? Why? + What is the best way for you to learn something new? + What are your long-term aspirations?
Relationships are the foundation of Talent Plus' business. The plus in our name stands for relationships. Kimberly Rath, president, Talent Plus, "Talent is optimized as a result of great relationships. Relationships create engaged associates that hold organizations together. By taking the time to invest in someone in 2011, we can bring out the best in each other and use relationships for the good of organizations and the good of people in general." Talent Plus Champion Honored on List of "40 Under 40" Full Article
Detroit - Crain's Detroit Business, a leading source of information on Detroit's business community, today honored Rita Fields, vice president of talent and work force strategies at Henry Ford West Bloomfield Hospital, a user of Talent Plus' science, as one of the 40 Under 40 Class of 2008. For the past 18 years, Crain's Detroit Business has honored the best and brightest in Southeast Michigan who have made their marks in business before age 40. Crain's evaluated candidates based on personal achievement and community impact.
One of the paradigm shifts Fields accomplished at Henry Ford West Bloomfield Hospital was to overhaul the system's recruiting and retention process, incorporating Talent Plus' technology.
"We added a lean process borrowed from the auto industry to our recruiting and hiring that wrings out the waste in the system and helps us attract the very best candidates possible," she said.
"After candidates apply online, a software program screens people out who do not meet the minimum requirements. People fitting the bill are then selected for structured interviews, which range from 30 minutes to two hours for executives."
"We cross-trained (human-resources employees) and took out some steps and we have it down to seven to 10 days [from up to four weeks previously]," Fields said.

The by-invitation-only event is hosted by the London Business School, iOpener and Roberts & Corr and will be held on July 8, 2008, at the London Business School. As the global economy stumbles and some pundits predict a 10-year slowdown, who will shape the world in 2020? Today's brightest and best school leavers will be the leaders of tomorrow. But what do we know of Generation Y? Who are they and what expectations do they have? How much are they prepared to give? This seminar will explore these questions by bringing together Ivy League and Oxbridge students on the cusp their working lives with leaders from the worlds of finance, industry and the media.Eight 18-year-olds will speak about their visions of their working futures. Participants will then be invited to debate the issues raised in an open-floor session chaired by BBC anchor Nisha Pillai. Key themes will be attracting, retaining and nurturing young talent in a globally competitive marketplace; leadership of the older generation by the younger; and innovative ways of recruiting and working in the Internet Age. The event will be covered exclusively by The Times newspaper. Said Jessica Pryce-Jones, co-founder and partner of iOpener: "Our students today will be tomorrow's leaders, so it is essential that we understand what makes them tick. This event will help business leaders and employers to plan ahead in terms of their long-term quest for talent. And it will help lay the foundations to support this generation in achieving its full potential." Kimberly Rath, co-founder and president of Talent Plus, remarks: "We are looking at a dramatic shift in the work force. The Gen Ys have brought many societal issues to bear. On the whole, people are looking to be respected and in a position where they feel their talents are best utilized in a position, team and culture that are a fit for them. This group - the Millennials/Gen Y - are savvy and, perhaps more than their predecessors, understand this. They want to be in a culture that, they perceive, cares about them, rewards and recognizes them and helps them in their path for the future. Talent Plus Volunteers Motivate Students Full Article
What are the ingredients for a recipe for success? Take a look at the partnership between Talent Plus and Maxey Elementary, and you just might figure it out. The past three years, Talent Plus volunteers have been enriching the lives of Maxey students with hands-on activities that tie in with their current lessons. "It is not very often you can find programs that intertwine and weave right in with the existing curriculum," said Pat Decker, principal at Maxey Elementary. Decker said the Junior Achievement program has done an excellent job of matching its units to Lincoln Public Schools' objectives. The program enhances what is already taught to the kids, he said, and adds a hands-on business perspective. "It takes the book learning we do in school and enhances it," Decker said. "Kids can see it applied in the real world, and it goes hand in hand." Kylie Fisher, company coordinator for Talent Plus, said the JA program is a good way for volunteers to get out in the community and be involved in the classroom. "It is really motivating to help them out and inform them of different things they might think about that might not get covered in the classroom," Fisher said. It is a refreshing feeling, she said, to see how excited the kids are to learn and have someone new teaching in the classroom. Decker said it is good for students to be exposed to as many teachers as possible, and the Talent Plus volunteers motivate students to be interested in the material they are speaking about. "It really becomes the highlight of the kids' week when the volunteers are here," Decker said. "It makes the rest of the week pleasant because the kids look forward to it and just love it." Talent Plus Dedicates the Hall Hospitality Center Full Article
Lincoln, Neb. - Talent Plus will dedicate the Hall Hospitality Center, the centerpiece of their building, on Saturday, Dec. 10, at 10 a.m. In attendance will be Louise Rasmussen, daughter of Dr. and Mrs. William E. Hall, co-founders of Talent Plus, and her husband, Wayne, as well as Dr. John Hall, the Halls' son, and his wife, Charlotte. There will be a guided tour of Talent Plus' new headquarters immediately following the dedication.
Dr. Hall was a professor at the University of Nebraska - Lincoln (UNL), where he was chair of the Psychology Department. While teaching at UNL, he began the Nebraska Human Resources Research Foundation (NHRRF), now known as the Nebraska Human Resources Research Institute. It was while working with NHRRF that Dr. Hall first met Talent Plus Chairman Doug Rath, then a college student counselor in that program.
Throughout his life, Dr. Hall focused his studies on those of successful people. He began by running various trials with college students to determine the best way to differentiate between highly talented and less talented student leaders. After initially observing students in a variety of settings and then using paper-and-pencil tests, he eventually used a structured interview process that allowed for the open expression of ideas, thoughts and feelings, which he grouped into "themes of personality." The themes from the research identified the most accurate and reliable characteristics in differentiating students who excelled and those who did not. The science and validity of the structured interview process is in use by Talent Plus today with its clients across the globe and is in more than 20 languages.
Dr. Hall earned his doctorate degree at Ohio State (one of only two schools at the time where psychology departments studied talented people) prior to his arrival at UNL. Hall left academia in 1969 to use the structured interview to identify top performers in the business world. In 1989, Dr. Hall formed Talent Plus with Kimberly and Doug Rath and Sandy Maxwell. Talent Plus has continued that study of talented people and the relationships necessary to help talent grow.

Talent Plus will focus on three items in working with the city. First, they will conduct individual assessments of administrative, management and supervisory positions within Lincoln Fire and Rescue. Second, Talent Plus will conduct an assessment of the management and administrative polices of Lincoln Fire and Rescue and identify changes to improve the business operation of the department. Third, they will identify an ongoing management and leadership program for the personnel in the department to enhance ongoing management practices and performance.

Talent Plus has assigned John Becker, a senior consultant, to be the project manager of this six-month contract for the three purposes stated by Mayor Seng. "John has a broad understanding of city government having worked for the Lincoln Police Department for 31 years prior to working for Talent Plus," states Kimberly Rath, Talent Plus' managing director and president. "He will lead a team of Talent Plus associates who will assist with the assessment and interviews. As project manager, John will serve as the management consultant to Lincoln Fire and Rescue administrators."
"Talent Plus made a very strategic decision several years ago to continue its presence in Lincoln and built the building we are standing in today. Talent Plus continues to look for ways to strengthen the community, not only by employing nearly 120 individuals, but by improving opportunities and life outcomes for all citizens in Lincoln and its client cities through financial contributions and community outreach. By partnering with the city in this cooperative venture, Talent Plus is again extending itself."
Talent Plus will begin Monday working with Lincoln Fire and Rescue managers on these initiatives. Initial assessments will identify the best-qualified individual to serve as interim fire chief. Advertisements for a permanent fire chief will begin by September 1. Talent Plus will consult with the city's Personnel Department to interview finalists for this position. As well, the six-month contract should allow Talent Plus to assist with the transition of the permanent fire chief selected.

Talent Plus is Helping Government Agencies Become Talent-Based Organizations Full Article
Lincoln, Neb. - Talent Plus has recently been awarded a five-year Multiple Award Schedule (MAS) contract by the General Services Administration (GSA) of the U.S. government under Schedule 738X, Human Resources Services. In order to qualify for this selective program, Talent Plus met an exacting set of standards and underwent a rigorous review by the GSA.
The MAS program is the premier government acquisition program in place today. It is the fastest, easiest and most effective contracting vehicle available, designed to help government agencies comply with all the rules and regulations to buy products and services the right way. Government agencies have significantly less work to do in negotiating a contract and have much greater flexibility in the amount and duration of contracts.
Orders placed under GSA MAS contracts are considered to be issued using full and open competition ordering. Government agencies purchasing through a GSA MAS contract vendor are not required to make a separate determination of fair and reasonable pricing as that has been precertified by GSA. Additionally, while mandatory small business preference programs do not apply to government agencies that place orders against GSA MAS contracts, such orders may be credited toward that agency's small business goals.
While Talent Plus has performed work for the government in partnership with other companies in the past, Talent Plus is excited at the new opportunities this contract award brings. The GSA MAS contract number is GS-02F-0019R and is issued under solicitation 2FYP-DR-99-0001-N.
Talent Plus Associates Move Into New Building Full Article
Lincoln, Neb. - Talent Plus associates will be moving into the company's new corporate headquarters today, Friday, Dec. 17, 2004, readying the company for start of business on Monday, Dec. 20. Talent Plus' new three-story, all-glass building is located at One Talent Plus Way, just to the north of 65th and Pioneers Boulevard. Talent Plus has been anticipating this move since groundbreaking in October 2003.
"This building will showcase our associates and clients; it's a building of museum quality. Through the simplicity of its clear exterior and interior walls, the heart of our business and its inner relationships can be reflected," offers Talent Plus Chairman Doug Rath. Of importance in the design phase was the culture of Talent Plus. "We want visitors to feel the warmth and welcoming nature of this space and have opportunities to interact." The building was designed to promote interaction and communication consistent with Talent Plus' Mission, Vision and Values. The building allows Talent Plus to accommodate planned growth - with plans to more than double its current size.
Talent Plus' decision to build in Lincoln came after looking at alternative sites in Chicago, Dallas and Colorado Springs. Rath and his wife, Kimberly, Talent Plus' managing director and president, have called Lincoln home since the 1960s. "The number one reason we stayed is the people; the human capital in Lincoln is extraordinary."
Talent Plus acquired one of the most unique sites in the city at the south side of Lincoln's Holmes Lake and Golf Course area. "From our new headquarters, we will be able to see the State Capitol building, the scoreboard at Memorial Stadium - we have a vista through the Antelope Parkway that is unparalleled," says Rath.
Robert Liner from Liner Design in Los Angeles designed the building. The local architect is The Clark Enersen Partners, the general contractor is Sampson Construction and financing was provided through First National Bank of Omaha.
